British Association ブリティッシュ・アソシエーションでブランチ☆

日本人のお友達やお知り合いは（来て4ヶ月にしては）たくさん出来ましたが、日本人でないお友達はまだ香港時代からのお友達お二人（ニュージーランド人とイギリス人）のみ。以前からお二人に、ブリティッシュ・アソシエーション主催の麻雀の会に参加しないかと誘っていただいていたのですが、少し落ち着くまで待っていただいていました。丁度そろそろと思っていたところに、ブリティッシュ・アソシエーションのイベントのブランチでフォトグラファーの方のトークがあるとお聞きして、丁度良い機会なので会員になり、今日のブランチに参加して来ました。これから時々麻雀にも参加するつもりです。麻雀は特別好きでもないのですがそれなりに楽しめますし、知り合いが増えるきっかけになればと思っています。夫がイギリス人なので、やはり英語で会話をするお友達も数人いると夫婦でのおつきあいがしやすいですし、日本人同士のおつきあいの良さもあれば、欧米の方とのおつきあいの良さもあるので、両方のお友達がいるのが理想です。


集まりはTanglin Clubで１０時からと聞いていましたが、１０時に集まっていたのは数えるほどでした（笑）。ビュッフェ式のブランチは、ハム類やチキンソーセージ、ベーコン、スクランブルエッグなどの朝食メニュー、小さなカップケーキ（？）などのデザートといろいろなものが並んでいました。珍しく早く（と言っても7時ですが、わたしにしては早い）目が覚めたものの、体の中はやはり覚めていないらしく、やはりあまり食べたい気分にはならなかったので形だけちょこっといただいただきました。大体、お腹が空いてくるのは、１１時過ぎた頃なのです。

たくさん（４０人くらい）の方が集まられて、ちょっとびっくりしました。香港での似たような集まりでは、もっとこじんまりとしていたので。それにしても、アジア人はわたし１人で、これにもびっくり。そして、冷房があまりに強いのにもびっくり。いやぁ～、寒くて寒くて、風邪をひきそうでした。キャミソールの上に厚めのリネンの長袖のチュニックであんなに寒かったのですから、半袖だったら凍えていました。途中から、（食べ終わってから）ナプキンを腕にかけたくらい寒かったです。

イベント名は、“Digital Photography – The Secrets of better photos” by Mark Stennett。オーストラリア人のMark Stennettさんによる「デジタル写真、良い写真を撮るための秘密」。

お話の内容は知っていることばかりでしたが、Markさんが撮られたお写真を見せていただいたり、知識としては知っていることを具体的に写真として見せていただいたり、楽しくあっという間のトークでした。ワークショップなどもされているようですので、機会があれば参加してみたいと思っています。

香港では毎日あっという間に過ぎてしまって、なかなかきちんと写真を撮ることに時間を作ることが出来なかったので、シンガポールに来たら暇を持て余すだろうから写真や手作りのクラフトなどじっくりしようと思っていました。暇を持て余してはいませんが（笑）、自由になる時間は多いはずなので、少し写真のことを勉強したいと思っています。ただ、思うに、わたしの写真のレベルが大変中途半端なのですね～。既に基礎知識に関しては頭に入っているので基礎コースではとても退屈してしまうのですが、上級のワークショップを受けられるほど上手く撮れるわけではないのですね。そして、自分がいったい何を撮りたいかがはっきりとしていないのも困ったこと。毎日食べた物の記録だけではつまらないなぁ～、とは思っているのですけれど。。。





I have made quite a few new Japanese friends in such a short time thanks to my ex-Hong Kong friends here, but I have only two non-Japanese friends (one NZ and one English). They've asked me if I wanted to join the British Association of Singapore so I can play Mahjong but I have been too busy up to now. Now that I'm feeling settled down I was thinking of joining them. Then I heard about one of their events called Brunch Bunch - the talk today was “Digital Photography - The Secrets of better photos” by Mark Stennett. It sounded interesting and was a good opportunity to join the BAoS, so that's what I did.

I'm not a morning person at all and although I woke up relatively early today (7.00am, which is extremely early for me), I just couldn't face any food that early in the morning when the brunch started (10.00am). However, I would have felt awkward not eating anything while other members are having their brunch so I had just a small amount. I was a little surprised that there were so many people (about 40) because when I attended some similar event in Hong Kong (although it was the American Association　since there is no British Association there) the number of attendees tended to be smaller to my knowledge. I was also surprised that I was the only Asian looking person there. Although I enjoyed the event, the place was soooo cold, I was completely frozen even though I was wearing a camisole and a long sleeve tunic (and quite thick material), it took a while to be defrosted after the event! I've never been so cold in my life apart from one occasion when we were in a cinema in Singapore. I don't normally get cold so I have stopped carrying a wrap with me here, but I guess I should.


The talk wasn't very long, so naturally it was only about the very basic rules of taking good photographs, nothing I haven't heard before came up, but I still enjoyed hearing from someone and being shown the photographs that show how certain rules work. From the way how people were reacting, most people don't even have such basic knowledge in general so that was what was required in such a meeting. Everyone at the table was very friendly, too, so I enjoyed the occasion.

I haven't had much chance to take time to improve my photography recently so I would love to take some sort of workshops or a course. However, I find that I'm sort of in between two levels. I have all the basic knowledge so an elementary course would be too boring for me. However, I'm not good enough or don't have enough confidence or courage to join a higher level workshop. Another problem - or perhaps the biggest problem - is that I don't know what sort of photographs I would like to take. I enjoy taking table photos but that has more to do with styling than photography itself. I would love to take some beautiful scenery or capture some characteristic scene of Asia and I also like artistic type of photographs. I'm not so interested in portraits, though...
